BETHLEHEM, Pa. — The Lehigh women’s tennis team will open the fall season this weekend in Annapolis, Md., at the Navy Invitational. The Mountain Hawks enter a new era this year with the addition of a head coach Olivia Leavitt.
This weekend’s tournament will feature three doubles flights and five singles flights. Lehigh will be one of eight teams competing in Annapolis this weekend. Participants include Binghamton, George Mason, Johns Hopkins, Mary Washington, Monmouth, St. Bonaventure and Navy.
At last year’s invite, the Mountain Hawks won one steal championship and three consolation console titles. junior Anouchka Dania and Megha Dania earned three of Lehigh’s four wins last year.
“I think from this year with three first years and five comebacks there is a lot of new energy, but I also think the comebacks have a new coach, they are excited about consistency and structure,” Leavitt said. “I think the team is really excited this year for a new chapter and to really start implementing more consistency and more structure in practices and goal setting.
“We’re really trying to define a new culture here that not only incorporates Lehigh’s values, but also the values that we’re going to establish as a team to move forward in this new era.”
Leading the Mountain Hawks this season is senior Junmoke James. James had six runner-up singles wins last year and finished the season with five doubles wins.
The Dania twins will also be back for Lehigh this season. The duo both finished with eight singles wins and ten doubles wins last year.
Allyce Gaborik and Hamsa Javagal are entering their second season for the Mountain Hawks. Javagal, who was named All-Patriot League second team, has seven singles wins, including a 4-0 record in second place.
With five Mountain Hawks returning this season, Leavitt also welcomes three additions to the team. First years Helena Cilella, Avery Hopkey and Bella Peters will all make their Lehigh debuts this fall.
“I think the first years honestly bring a ton of energy to the field,” Leavitt said. “I think they’re all quite outgoing and want to be part of that team experience. So they bring a lot of competitive energy, but also a strong, positive cultural energy, which I think is good for the team. team entering the new era.”
Lehigh will play in three more invitational tournaments this fall before wrapping up the fall season with a home game. After the Navy Invitational, the Mountain Hawks will host their annual Lehigh Invitational on Saturday, September 17 and Sunday, September 18.
Lehigh will travel to West Point, NY for the Army Invitational September 23-25. To wrap up the tournament portion of the schedule, the Mountain Hawks will take part in the ITA Regionals. Princeton will host the ITA Regionals from Friday, September 30 through Monday, October 3.
To close out the fall season, Lehigh will host Monmouth at Ulrich Varsity Courts on Saturday, October 15. The game is scheduled to start at 12 p.m.
