Since its inception in 1865, the University of Ottawa has sought to live its mission in unique and powerful ways. It all started with the collaboration between two American Baptist missionaries, Jotham and Eleanor Meeker, and the Ottawa Indian Tribe of Kansas to promote education and peace in a rapidly changing world. From this relationship, the University of Ottawa was born. Always mindful of the University’s original commitments, treaties and agreements were updated and strengthened in 2008 by President and CEO Eichner and the Board of Trustees, allowing all Ottawa Indians to attend the University at any of its locations for free. Since 2008, more than 350 tribal members have enrolled and more than 150 have graduated, far more than in the previous 143 years combined.

The University of Ottawa has grown from its origins on the banks of the Swamp Swan River in Kansas to a comprehensive, non-profit educational institution that serves traditional-aged students and adult learners from around the world. Firmly grounded in its mission, the University of Ottawa achieves its educational goals through its liberal arts and professional studies programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The University of Ottawa guides learners to integrate faith, learning and life, to acquire the skills they need to succeed and prosper, and to do so with a heightened sense of knowledge, compassion, respect and service that our world needs.
