Text description provided by the architects. Dahei New Village is located in Xiyang Township, Jinning County, Kunming City, Yunnan Province China. Most of the local villagers belong to the Yi minority. The vernacular buildings there are mainly earthen and some have recently fallen into disrepair. A team from One Village University (1U1V) has completed a series of adobe building retrofit projects and developed a set of innovative adobe construction strategies that are well recognized for meeting local needs. Gongfang (community hall) is a multi-purpose activity hall that villagers use to hold events such as weddings, funerals and festivals. However, the old community hall was too old to be used and presents security risks. The 1U1V team secured an agreement with the township government to rebuild it using innovative anti-seismic adobe construction technology to provide a safer, comfortable, functional and artistic space for the villagers.

The newly designed Community Hall sits on the site of the former Community Hall. The building includes the outdoor area, the hall and the kitchen. Its circulation spaces and layouts are inspired by the way of life of the villagers and the design of the original communal hall. The walls of the building are tamped with earth excavated from the site. In order to improve its seismic performance, the earth is appropriately mixed with sand and gravel according to the particle size analysis of the soil. No chemical additives such as cement or other stabilizers have been added to the wall. Therefore, wall materials can be easily recycled or returned to nature.

Due to the low viscosity of the local raw earth, H steel columns are used for the load-bearing structure. The frame structure is integrated with steel columns, concrete foundation, floor ring beam and top ring beam to ensure the seismic safety of the building. The aforementioned innovative technology has been tested and verified by the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute of Kunming University of Science and Technology and the Terra Center of 1U1V through numerous experiments and projects.

To meet project requirements for span, natural lighting, durability and aesthetics, the roof truss adopts bamboo steel structure. Raw earth and bamboo with lower embodied energy and carbon emissions, combined with passive designs such as natural lighting and ventilation, and a thermal mass wall, ensure a very low environmental load throughout the building life cycle.

The building is co-constructed by the 1U1V female construction team and local villagers. The “high science, low technology” strategy with the principle of “local materials, local technology, local labor” is important to improve the environmental, economic and social sustainable development of the rural area.
